My four-year-old judged my cooking. Out loud. To my face. So this episode is the full nugget-night confession — the 5:30pm chaos, the kids who change their food rules every twenty minutes, the snack-drawer treasure chest, and the guilt that shows up the second the tray hits the oven. Plus, why a good mum is just a mum whose kids ate dinner.
In this funny, defiantly honest solo episode, I talk about the meal that started a thousand mum-guilt spirals: chicken nuggets. Again. As a nurse, I know what a balanced diet looks like — I could draw the food pyramid from memory. But knowing what to feed your kids and getting them to eat it are two completely different planets. One is textbook. The other is war.
I walk us through the 5:30pm reality (not a time, a punishment), the four-year-old who won't eat anything green, the six-year-old who'll only eat potato if it's from Macca's, and the daily briefing I need from my own children to know which foods are approved this week. I get into the Instagram lunchbox lie — the cucumber fans, the smiley-face blueberry arrangements, the calm-voice mums I doen't understand — and the snack drawer my kids open like it's Christmas morning every single time.
Then the bit that twists the knife in the nicest way: my husband puts the same nuggets on the same plate and feels nothing. No guilt. No 11pm iron-deficiency spiral. I land somewhere honest — my kids are fed, they're growing, corn is a vegetable and I'm counting it. Some nights it's a proper meal. Some nights it's nuggets. One time it was a banana in the car. All of it counts. A warm permission slip for every mum who is, right now, defrosting nuggets and feeling weird about it.
